CHURCHILL BROTHERS ARE FEDERATION CUP CHAMPIONS

Churchill Brothers 3 (Balwant Singh – 21st, Alesh Sawant – 47th, Abdel Hamid Shabana – 67th)
beat Sporting Clube de Goa 1 (Victorino Fernandes – 62nd)

The trend is changing. Amidst the horde of foreign recruits, an Indian has made it a habit of scoring crucial goals in crunch situations. It’s now a regular feature whenever Churchill Bothers play.

Put your hands together to applaud the Singh from Hoshiarpur. Balwant Singh is the ‘King’ for the Goan outfit at the moment. He opened the scoring for Churchill Brothers to set the tone in the Final of the 35th Federation Cup against Sporting Clube de Goa at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Cochin on Saturday (January 25).

Churchill sustained the momentum and wrapped it up in style. Riding on goals from Balwant, Alesh Sawant and Abdel Hamid Shabana, Churchill Brothers romped home convincingly as they beat Sporting Clube 3-1 in an one-sided Final to lift their maiden Federation Cup title. For Sporting Clube, Victorino Fernandes reduced the margin.

Looking back, one also needs to applaud Churchill’s team-effort. The discipline, both on and off the field was visible right from day one. Coach Mariano Dias planned differently keeping in mind his rival Team as Churchill went better with every match. Deserving Winners, no doubt!

With both Teams preferring to play safe, Balwant felt it best to break the deadlock in the 21st minute. Collecting a ball from Denzil Franco, Balwant with his deft feint sidestepped Joyner Lourenco, went past Sporting Goalkeeper Ravi Kumar and placed it into the net. The Churchill trademark, of taking the lead in all the Matches, continued. The crowd preferred to backtrack and find out – this was Balwant’s fourth goal in the Tournament.

Churchill’s second goal came immediately after resumption, An unmarked Sawant had all the time in World to tap in Wolfe’s centre after the Sporting defence failed to react and clear it in time.

More was in store. Shabana, who till then, was playing the perfect foil to Lenny Rodrigues, made it 3-0 in the 65th minute. The former collected a Thangjam Singh through pass and placed it past Sporting Goalkeeper Ravi Kumar. Victorino Fernandes did pull one back for Sporting in the 67th minute when he tapped in Kalu’s through pass before Churchill Goalkeeper Lalit Thapa could intercept it. But it didn’t change the fortune of the match.

Earlier, no Team was willing to the risk early and preferred to play it safe. Though the ball travelled from one box to the other, none were able to penetrate.

It was not till the 16th minute before any attack looked threatening until Churchill Brothers’ Anthony Wolfe sped down the left flank to sneak into the rival box only to be thwarted by a composed Gonzalo Neila. Sporting on the other hand, preferred to attack down the right, Bevan d’Mello trying to unsettle their Goan neighbours with his speed. But the Churchill defence wasn’t porous.

Post Balwant’s goal, it could have been disastrous for Sporting had not an alert Ravi Kumar cleared the danger after Neila had failed to intercept a long ball. Add to that, Wolfe losing his balance, Sporting were lucky indeed.

Churchill, by then, had taken over the reins of the match. Shabana, in an effort to blast it in, hit the post. He collected the ‘second-ball’ following a Thangnam corner-kick and even as Ravi Kumar flung himself full, it beat his hands and bounced back off the post as Churchill held onto their one-goal lead at the interval.

In the second half, Churchill Goalkeeper Lalit Thapa’s reflexes came to his Team’s rescue when he saved a blinder – a Ogba Kalu placement from inside the 6-yard box. It happened in the 48th minute.

Churchill could have added added more to their tally but it wasn’t destined. First, Joyner cleared Shabana’s placement as it was addressed to the net and then, in the next minute (85th), Wolfe failed to address it into an open net. The Champions went back richer by Rs. 25 lakh while the Runners-up collected Rs. 15 lakh.

Why his Excellency President of India cannot not practice what he preaches today-65th. Re-Public day ?

Rakesh Manchanda

On the holy occasion of the 65th.Republic Day.Let us see what President tells in para 12 of speech....Quote :

“Fellow Citizens: ...A democratic nation is always involved in argument with itself. This is welcome, for we solve problems through discussion and consent, not force..... India must find its own solutions to its problems.”

Uquote :
There is not single word in the speech as to how the 50% India`s women security deadlock in Delhi and in India needs to be solved.

Is it because our President own son and MP had in the past given a loose statement against women protesters against gang rape calling them `dented and painted` ?

Why has the President speech not covering as to how the Police in Delhi under Centre Government fails to register even a petty FIR by a common Indian ?

Our President in fifth para of his speech says:
” ......Elections do not give any person the licence to flirt with illusions. Those who seek the trust of voters must promise only what is possible. Government is not a charity shop.”

Why his Excellency President of India cannot not practice what he and our Government preaches today on 65th. Re-Public day ?

Allow me to revisit Parliament archives as follows where Minister Mukherjee was trying to form consensus on FDI as FDI is certainly not a charity:

FDI policy rocked Parliament on 29th. Nov-2011 for third day; both houses adjourned. What did Minister Pranab Mukherjee tell media ? Pranab dada told them that no decision in this regard could be taken without consulting the Union Cabinet, which had approved allowing 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail last week.

“I would like to be guided either by Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) or tax. There cannot be a situation that somebody will make money on an asset located in India and will not pay tax either in India or to the country of its origin....Please remember, when the foreign investment was not there we did not eat lizard….. Therefore, we are not in that desperate a situation that a country of 1.2 billion people will be treated as a tax haven like Cayman Islands, Isle of Man or Virgin Island. We cannot be equated with them,” the minister Pranab Mukherjee said.

Allow me please few words as collective humble contribution based on FDI struggle:
*America still had the Best Governance and participatory Model at town/village levels in the recent past.
*Public Participatory Model rejected Wal Mart in retail on several occasions and disallowed corporate to run Banks in America.
*In India/Africa/Asia market American Corporate and American Government Nexus appears to buy support via Horse-trading in foreign Parliaments.
*Prof Arun Kumar article in 2011 on willingness of Corporate in America to pay more Taxes is as usual a good exposure/post-mortem for immediate survival of Americans.
*Prof Arun article in the said article had no connection with same corporate behaviour say of Monsanto in India.
*Why Corporate in America are forced to do so ?
*Why Rich in America and Rich in India do not think alike for their self survival ?
*Coz American parliament unlike India has seriously warned Swiss bank to disclose list of American *Black money hiders asap.
*American Corporate who are worlds biggest and worst borrowers/loan defaulters are living not only on borrowed money but also on borrowed time.
*America makes the currency of other countries weak by endless, limitless and senseless global borrowing.
*I think all of us support commons in America but at times we are forced to lick our wounds in *Asia/Africa where we find American corporate-Politician intervention hunting blood, searching more power and hugging more greed.
*If the cost of Investment of a common man say for example in Africa for a study in a university is suddenly up by 15% in the last 20 days it means that America has borrowed 15% more wealth from pockets of all Global citizens.
*There is no guarantee for recovery of this 15 % loan by America as this is as good as a borrowing on a non refundable basis.
*For money, investment and Rules there is no Global equal playing field.
*In India Corporate driven by well wishes and `intelligent` CEOs continue to advise middle level investors to hide money in Tax Heavens Gold and in Temples.
*No one is bothered to increase the purchasing power of the poor as `consumers` in the Market for the long term survival of Rich.
*There is a long overdue need to have a more equal global participatory model from remote villages to the World markets.
*Till then...Jai Ho America Role Model !

Neck stiffness is common and can be uncomfortable enough to hamper day to day life. Ten easy steps can prevent neck pain, said Padma Shri & Dr. B C Roy National Awardee, Dr. K K Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India and Senior National Vice President, Indian Medical Association.

Following are the 10 steps:
*Don’t stay in one position for too long
*Keep the computer monitor at eye level.
*Use the hands–free function of the phone or wear a headset.
*Prop your touch–screen tablet or the ipad on a pillow so that it sits at a 45° angle, instead of lying flat on your lap.
*Keep your prescription up to date, if you wear glasses to prevent leaning your head back to see better.
*Don’t use too many pillows as it can stifle your neck’s range of motion.
*Before you move a big wardrobe across the room, consider what it might do to your neck and back, and ask for help.
*Sleep well.
*Call your doctor if neck pain is associated with radiating pain, weakness, or numbness of an arm or leg.
*Also call the doctor if you have fever or weight loss associated with your neck pain, or severe pain.

Education must transform

ANURADHA GOVIND
PRINCIPAL, J M INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Over the years, with competition getting tougher every year and seats getting fewer in college, the education system has still not changed. Here is a look into the current education system in India and how we need to change it.

To deliberate on the purpose of education of education, let’s go by tracing its roots. It is popularity known to be derived from the Latin word ‘edu co’-which means ‘to educe’ or draw out’. There are some other root words too, like, ‘Educare’ which means ‘to bring up’ and ‘Educare’ which means ‘to draw out from within’. Education, rather a good and purposeful education, should act as a stimulant for a students’ mind. It should be able to draw the students to correlate what they read in the text-books with the real world around them. Educating a child is not filling up his mind with all kinds of facts and figures, but to ignite his/her mind to find, explore, analyze and learn. The vital need is to develop love for learning and interest to know more and more. Once this goal is attained, the ground for ‘good and meaningful education’ is ready. It is “though” a creative process which eventually develops overall personality of the children. Through this, we can transform the students into dynamic and result oriented citizens with a mind of their own and with the courage to mouth their opinion to go beyond instructing from the book. Arousing the curiosity of students is perhaps one of the most important aspects of teaching-learning because once this is done, a student starts making self driven effort to explore and learn on his own. Here group dynamics plays a major role too. Therefore, there should be a strong emphasis on participatory learning, group work and collaborative projects. This enhances the emotional quotient of children and the spirit of team work, collaboration, respecting each other’s view point and sharing opinions without offence. This mind training is of utmost important a team.

When we talk about transformation, yes education must transform the mind, soul and personality. Therefore it is not only through knowledge but also through instilling value systems and life skills in children, so that they are not just equipped to earn a living but also to live a happy and purposeful life. Such righteous students become the sensitive citizens who lead to the evolution of enlightened and caring society. That should be the mission of education.

The purpose and mission of education guides are vision for the school. Does vision reflect a school having a big and fancy building? Having a big laboratory? Or having a big infrastructure? Not at all; Great schools must have great teachers who love teaching and with great vision. The vision should be to make a beautiful school which generates a safe, secure and happy environment for promoting exploration, creativity and real learning for the development of righteous youth who are an asset to the school, family, society, nation five minds for the future, as described by Howard Gardner - The disciplinary mind, the synthesizing mind, The creative mind, the respectful mind and the ethical mind.

No syllabus can teach such things; no textbook can develop such minds. It has to be imbibed in the overall culture and vision of the school. the creative approach of the school and the way of life of mod.

Coming to the final and most important aspect of the right approach to education ‘who should be the centre of education, if we revisit our vision, mission, purpose and outcome; all of them lead to a single objective. It is ‘the child’, who must be central to all experiences leading to learning therefore good school must aim at providing a secure and encouraging environment that strengths, develop life skills, productive habits and sensitivity for fellows and society and courage to speak his/her mind..

To impart education that brings transformation in the child, the school may not have fancy building or five star commodities but it must have holistic curriculum, engaged children, motivated teachers, assured parents, and inspiring role-models.

NEW CRIMES, NEW VICTIMS, HUMAN RIGHTS VIS-À-VIS THE EXISTING CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.

$
0

Rajendra Dhar
POLICE WATCH INDIA (Regd. NGO).

More recently, the entire rights issue has been complicated by an upsurge of less traditional crimes, which has brought with it new classes of victims.

Such offences as consumer frauds, economic frauds, property related frauds, over charging, adulteration, environmental pollution and rampant corruption victimize large groups of people, rather than individuals. Trafficking in illicit drugs, many forms of racketeering and fraud against the State have been called "victimless crimes". All organized crimes should compulsorily be booked & tried under MOCOCA.

Even when the victims are clearly visible, such as those caught up in trafficking for sexual exploitation and forced labour, child abuse, frauds by builders etc., a new set of rights may be needed. Both victims and offenders may be trapped in foreign countries, stymied by language problems, cultural differences and other obstacles hindering their rights.

Trafficked women or migrant victims of smuggling rings may feel particularly threatened, since they could be treated as illegal prostitutes and/or immigrants and denied protection or other victims' services. Because of their illegal status, victims may be afraid to report any crimes against them to law enforcers.

In some countries, legal authorities may give key witnesses immunity. This boosts the chances of a successful prosecution, which would itself deter illegal trafficking.

Promising immunity may not be enough, however, for victims or witnesses of organized crime who fear retaliation if they testify. Some nations have set up witness protection programmes, which may offer new identities after the trial, but these are costly. Experimenting with less expensive methods, such as anonymous testimony, is urgently needed.

Presently the HUMAN RIGHTS are heavily loaded in favour of the offenders/criminals which are acting against humanity at large as they are leading to lesser & lesser convictions thereby endangering the already fragile fabric of civilized living.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS AROUND THE WORLD VARY, BUT MANY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING RIGHTS FOR OFFENDERS:

Rights of offenders:
The right not to be subject to arbitrary arrest, detention, search or seizure;
The right to counsel;
The presumption of innocence;
The standard of proof;
The right to a public trial by an independent court;
The right to test the prosecution evidence;
The right to give and call evidence;
The right to appeal.

ALTHOUGH THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY AGREED IN THE 1985 UN VICTIMS' DECLARATION ON THE FOLLOWING RIGHTS FOR VICTIMS BUT THE SAME ARE YET TO BE IMPLEMENTED BY MOST OF THE COUNTRIES INCLUDING INDIA:

Rights of victims:
The right to be treated with respect and recognition;
The right to be referred to adequate support services;
The right to receive information about the progress of the case;
The right to be present and give input to the decision-making;
The right to counsel;
The right to protection of physical safety and privacy;
The right to compensation both from the offender and the State.

WHAT THE CRIME VICTIMS HAVE TO SAY - IN BRIEF:

"I was the victim, not the State! Why didn't anyone consult me?"

"When I became a victim, I believed in justice but awoke to the reality of crime, rights of criminals and injustice for victims."

"To be a victim is an unforgettable nightmare but to become a victim at the hands of the criminal justice system is an unforgivable travesty."

"Somewhere along the way, the criminal justice system began to serve lawyers, judges and defendants. Victims are treated with institutionalised disinterest. The neglect of crime victims is a national disgrace."

"How can justice be obtained by hearing "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth" when the victims or surviving victims' families are not heard?"

"Now is the time to restore balance to the criminal justice system."

"Our forefathers would be amazed to learn that in these days, criminal defendants have not only the rights outlined in the constitution, but a myriad of other procedural protections which have tipped the scales of justice drastically out of balance."

“In the prevailing Criminal Justice System victims of crime are the only losers.”

"Since the victim was routinely present and heard during criminal trials in that day, the Constitutional authors likely saw no need to include rights for victims."

Everybody should understand the ground reality that “anybody & everybody” can be “a victim of crime” at times irrespective of any cause, reason, consideration etc.

IF WE REALLY WANT TO CURB CRIME & CONTROL CRIMINALS AS WELL AS PEOPLE HAVING CRIMINAL TENDENCIES WE WILL HAVE TO DO AWAY WITH THE DICTUM THAT “THE ACCUSED IS INNOCENT TILL PROVED GUILTY” ESPECIALLY IN CASES WHERE PRIMA FACIE EVIDENCE AGAINST THE ACCUSED IS AVAILABLE ON RECORD.
