Physical illness can trigger depression

Dr KK Aggarwal
Padma Shri and Dr B C Roy National Awardee
President, Heart Care Foundation of India

If you have depression a thorough physical exam and careful medical history should be evaluated to pinpoint a physical source of the problem for an appropriate treatment, said Padma Shri, Dr. B C Roy National Awardee & DST National Science Communication Awardee, Dr. K K Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India and Sr National Vice President Indian Medical Association.

In depression not only look for what’s going on in the mind and brain but also check what’s going on in the body. Many medical problems are linked to mood disturbances.

Over fifty percent of heart attack survivors and those with cancer report feeling depressed. Depression is also linked to diabetes, Parkinson’s and other chronic conditions.

Depression too can affect the course of a physical disease. Depression is linked with slower recovery from a heart attack and an increased risk for future heart trouble.

Thyroid disorders also affect mood. Overactive thyroid can cause mania and under active thyroid can cause depression. Other medical conditions associated with mood disorders include certain neurological conditions (multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s), other hormonal imbalances, and lack of vitamin B12.

S.S. Dogra

What is Career : In the modern age, Career planning is one of the most important issue in your life, which needs no emphasis. It is important for two reasons firstly, whether you opt for a career in jobs or prefer to be on your own. You will have to look for these options. Remember also that these are days of specialization or we must say professionalism. Secondly, the new developments due to information technology (IT) and globalisation of the economy, there are now more options than ever before.

Path for Career Planning: Actually, appropriate time for making career starts at the age of 14-15 years when a student enters the Ninth Class itself. This the vital stage to shape a career. This is the formative age to achieve much more important reason, however, is that it is after the 10 + 2 level that a wide variety of course options are available to choose from. This means that as the first step you will have to choose from the three streams viz., science, arts and commerce and the appropriate combination of subjects, when you enter the 10+2 level. In this issue, we are giving some useful information about career/job oriented courses and some useful contact address and details.

My 3 Year Old Baby Is Dead

Road accidents kill 15 people every hour in India. This needs to end. Ask PM Modi to ensure a strong road safety law.

I saw my 3-year-old baby and my husband being mowed down by a speeding bus coming on the wrong side.
 Lineshya

This happened just a few weeks ago and within minutes my life had turned upside down. But the driver who killed them was out on bail in no time.

I cannot begin to tell you the shock and pain I am going through. But my little girl Lineshya’s death cannot go in vain. India is notorious for its lack of road safety. I want this to change.

That’s why I started this petition along with Save Life Foundation asking PM Modi to introduce a stronger road safety law in the Parliament.

I am not alone in my suffering. Just recently, we lost Union Minister Gopinath Munde in a car accident. Over 11 lakh people have been killed in road accidents in India in the past decade.

The current law has not been effective. It is time we demand a new law which is strong and ensures safety for everyone.

It is every citizen’s problem. If lakhs of us demand a better road safety law, Mr. Modi will see it as a priority issue.

Sign my petition and let him know that we don’t want anymore innocent lives to be lost!

Thank you for taking action,

Jyoti Gupta

President Pranab Mukherjee will receive a copy of Encyclopedia of Hinduism, carrying about 7,000 entries by 1,000 esteemed scholars from across the world.

A function will be held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, June 23, 2014 to give a copy of the encyclopedia, an official release said. Encyclopedia of Hinduism is a project of Rishikesh- based India Heritage Research Foundation (IHRF).

"Twenty-five years in the making, the product of more than 1,000 esteemed scholars from around the world, totaling 11-volumes and approximately 7,000 entries, the Encyclopedia of Hinduism is the first time in history that the depth and breadth of India's great spiritual culture is made available in authentic, academic and scholastic form," the IHRF said.

The encyclopedia is a compendium of thousands of years of history, science, art, architecture, polity, religion, philosophy and culture, it said.

"Further, the encyclopedia is not limited to Hinduism as a religion, but rather provides all inclusive treatment of India's spiritual culture (including coverage of Sikhism, Jainism and Buddhism traditions in India)," the IHRF said.

The encyclopedia was launched in India by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the international edition was launched in the US by the University of South Carolina, Columbia. The encyclopedia was conceived by Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, founder of IHRF, it said.
