Vegetables & fruits lower chances of getting some cancers

Vegetables and fruits help lower your chances of getting head, neck, and breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancers. Even one additional serving of vegetables or fruits could help lower the risk of head and neck cancer. The more fruits and vegetables you can consume, the better.

Quoting an International Study from National Cancer Institute, Padma Shri & Dr. BC Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India & National Vice President Elect IMA said that those who eat six servings of fruits and vegetables per 1,000 calories have a 29% decreased risk relative to those who have 1.5 servings. In the study, after adjusting the data to account for smoking and alcohol use – known head and neck cancer risk factors – the researchers found that those who consumed the most fruits and vegetables had the lowest risk for head and neck cancers. Vegetables appeared to offer more cancer prevention than fruits alone did. Adding just one serving of fruit or vegetables per each 1000 calories consumed daily resulted in a 6% reduction of risk.

In another study, broccoli and soy protein were found to protect against the more aggressive breast and ovarian cancers. When consumed together, digesting broccoli and soy forms a compound called di-indolylmethane (DIM). In lab experiments, the researchers found that DIM could affect the motility of breast and ovarian cancer cells, which could help keep cancers from spreading. Soy, acts like estrogen and is a nutritious, healthy food, and should be eaten in moderation.

Yet another study compared intake of flavonols to their risk of pancreatic cancer. Flavonols are protective compounds found in fruits and vegetables, such as onions, apples, berries, kale and broccoli. Those who had the highest consumption of flavonols reduced their risk of pancreatic cancer by 23%. The benefit was even greater for people who smoked. Smokers with high levels of flavonols reduced their risk of pancreatic cancer by 59%.

JRD TATA FLYOVER IN PUNE

$

0

The Pune metropolitan region's first double-decker flyover was inaugurated by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar at Nashik Phata in Pimpri on Saturday Feb 15 2014. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) began work on the flyover - named Bharatratna J R D Tata flyover - in July 2010.

Built at a cost of Rs 103.51 crore, the flyover is located in Kasarwadi at the critical junction where the Pune-Nashik highway meets the Mumbai-Pune highway. While the Nashik highway has been widened to 42 metres, the Mumbai-Pune highway has been widened to 61 metres.

The upper flyover, which will have one-way traffic, will enable motorists travelling from Pune towards Nashik (or Bhosari) to proceed directly without stopping at the junction. The lower flyover connects Bhosari with Sangvi, Pimple Saudagar, Pimple Gurav and Wakad. With two-way traffic, it crosses the Mumbai-Pune highway stretch, the Pune-Mumbai railway line and the Pavana River. It will help motorists travelling from Nashik (or Bhosari) to Sangvi, Wakad and other destinations, including the Dehu Road-Katraj bypass.

The undersigned had appealed to the authorities to name this strategically located flyover after JRD Tata. Pl refer his letter given below.

TRIBUTE TO THE VISIONARY BHARAT RATNA JRD TATA

The Nasik Phata Flyover, which is of Strategic Importance, stands testimony to the efforts of the workers and officers of the Contractors and the Consultants who have left no stone unturned in making this Infrastructure Project see the light of day without much delay.

This Flyover acts as a Bridge between the two twin cities of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, in addition to linking Mumbai to Pune, Mumbai to Nasik, Pune to Nasik and importantly, Mumbai to IT Park. Being a high-traffic density zone on the NH4 (around 50% of the traffic comprises heavy and light vehicles passing over the Flyover to and from Mumbai, Pune, Nasik and IT Park), the earlier bottlenecks due to halting of dense traffic for long time intervals at the signals have been eliminated. Quick travel time has resulted in time saving, fuel and cost saving to the citizens and thus to the National Exchequer. Decibel levels have reduced significantly due to smooth flowing traffic, thus decreasing sound pollution. Air pollution levels have also diminished considerably.

Lakhs of workers from Pune and an equal number from Pimpri-Chinchwad cross this Flyover everyday for work. Apart from the time saved, the reduced fatigue in travelling long distances from their residences to their factories/offices has led to the workers reaching their place of work fresh, resulting in more efficient working, increased productivity and better health of the workers.

The Flyover is thus a real boon to the citizens of Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune and the twin cities have come closer. With enhanced proximity, response time is also expected to be shorter, leading to further economic boom in the area.

This Flyover is a feather in the cap for the PCMC, which was recently the fastest growing corporation in Asia. Today, the PCMC is one of the richest Corporations in India, perhaps second only to Bombay Municipal Corporation. This is true because of the numerous large scale industries in the Region, along with thousands of medium, small and tiny scale factories and ancillary units catering to the big industries.

This has been made possible largely due to the giant contribution of the Tata Group (Jamsetji Tata in the 19th changing the face of industrial India). JRD Tata, who had an Extraordinary Vision, identified the latent force of Pune as a Powerhouse of Brain Power in the early 1960s. He nurtured a Vision to harness the tremendous Potential of the Educated Youth and Intellectuals in Pune (traditionally the Seat of Education and the Oxford of the Orient) and was aware of the significant impact that Pune and Punekars could make in engineering and other industries.

When India was trying to shift gears from the agriculture-dominated developing economy towards becoming an industrially developed nation, JRD Tata established TELCO (now called Tata Motors) – (earlier set up in 1945 only in Jamshedpur) – in Pune in 1967. Since then till date, his efforts over the next decades have directly led to generation of direct employment for several thousands; and indirectly to lakhs of people who depend on the Tata Group as workers in ancillary units, thus contributing to the Welfare of the Nation through Creation of Wealth.

It has enabled millions to gain access to a better Standard of Living and to Good Education. JRD Tata supported TELCO Top Management’s plans in making a singular contribution to the environment by blasting the rocky terrain and planting thousands of trees. As trees need water, an artificial lake was constructed for water storage. For decades the TELCO Nursery has supplied thousands of fruit trees to neighbouring villages, bringing greenery and light to the infertile villages around.

Over the years, PCMC has had all-round progress in the industrial and health care sectors, infrastructure, social and economic upliftment of the people, more avenues for technical, medical and other professional educational facilities, thus creating a new middle class and an upper middle class; the bulk of the credit going to JRD Tata who was Chairman of the Tata Group – the largest industrial conglomerate of industries of India – from 1938 to 1991. JRD Tata’s latent genius for man management came to the forefront when he settled into his role as Chairman. JRD Tata had the noble, unselfish thought that what is good for India is good for century and JRD Tata from the late 1920’s had largely been instrumental in JRD Tata received the Padma Vibhushan Award in 1955. The nation’s highest award – the Bharat Ratna – was conferred on him in 1992.

This was the message of one of his former companies in appreciation:
He touched the sky and it smiled.
He stretched out his arms and they encircled the globe.
His vision made giants of men and organizations.

What could be a better tribute to JRD Tata than naming the Nasik Phata Flyover after him? With several Tata group organizations, including the flagship and truly global Tata Motors Ltd. based in Pimpri-Chinchwad, it will be a fitting recognition of JRD Tata’s yeoman services to the Nation for the cause of industry and development. It will also be an honour for the cultural capital of Maharashtra and the industrial, automotive and fast growing IT and BT hub, and for the Citizens of the Twin Cities of Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune.

Distractions During Driving

Dr Sanjay Kulshrestha

Conscious Citizens, India

Multitasking behind the wheel can be dangerous.
Distracted driving in its various forms contributes to about 18% of serious or fatal crashes.
Remember : A slight distraction at high speeds can prove fatal !

For safe driving, proper coordination of three systems is extremely necessary viz:
• Eyes - fixed on to the road
• Hands – to have a good grip on the steering
• Mind - should react quickly to any unfavourable situation

An act that affects the efficiency of any one of these three factors can prove to be potentially dangerous.

Distraction No.1- Use of Cell Phone
• Distracted driving due to cell phone has become a dangerous trend on Indian roads and at present this is the most common among all distractions while driving.

• In some countries like USA, statistics indicate that 28% of all car accidents are caused by drivers using cell phones.

THE RISK :
• Talking on the mobile can delay our reaction time by 0.5-1.5 seconds and the chances of fatal crashes increase four to five times more than normal !!
• Driving while using a cell phone can reduce brain activity by 37%.
• Many believe that using a mobile phone while driving has the same or even greater risk as that of being drunk [comparable to .08mg/dl of alcohol].

Texting: The MOST dangerous (23 times riskier) among all cell phone related tasks, including talking, dialing, or reading messages on the phone while driving.

• It engages and distracts all three systems i.e. visual[eyes off the road], manual [fingers on key pad] and the brain.

• Sending or receiving a text takes a driver's eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, this means you cross about 100 meters length of roads blind !!

Hands-free set cell phone also distracts your mind and is just as dangerous as a hand-held set.
Reason being: Though your hands are free, the concentration power of brain is affected as it becomes inattentive during talking. Hands only follow commands of the brain and if that commander is busy the army will sit idle during any alarming incidence.

Talking while driving a two wheeler is equally, if not more dangerous. It is dangerous even for pedestrians: Walking with phones leads to attention deficit, slowing down of reflexes and make us blind to dangers on the road.

There is a rising concern about many serious health hazards & warnings in relation to cell phones like brain cancer, reduced fertility, sleep disorder, anxiety to mobile ring, etc, etc. - - - - we have yet to report the FIRST death due to cell phone induced brain cancer in the world.

What we can confirm right now is that - - - - - - - - - - approx. 60,000 deaths occur every year due to cell phone related distracted driving all over the world [ a very conservative estimate !]

Distraction No. 2 : Dashboard Dining: With the popularity of fast food, the people are frequently seen eating or drinking during driving. The fast food chains are making changes in their menu and its packaging so that it is better suited for dining while driving.

Eating while driving not only causes distractions but can also complicates the condition of a person after accident by causing choking of respiratory tract due to aspiration of food particle. This choking due to food items in mouth can kill someone instantly !!

Distraction No.3: Adjusting Radio, CD Player or GPS: It is frequently observed that people while driving try to tune in the radio or look for CDs/cassettes in glove compartment that divides their attention.

If you are a ‘highly selective type’ of music lover then it is always better to keep your favourite pieces ready to play before driving. If you have a co-passenger then instruct him to do so.

Distraction No. 4 : Children
• They may distract driver’s attention by playing or talking constantly, throwing toys, frequently changing their seats from front to back or play with the steering or other important levers.
• Sometimes a ball can move forwards in driver’s seat and can be trapped under the brakes.
• Children should be taught car manners just as we teach them table manners.

Distraction No. 5 love-making during driving : [Car as a love nest]
• Although no data are available, it is not infrequent to find love-making during driving as a cause of severe or even fatal accidents on roads. The moving car has been found a safe, easy, cozy and economic place for dating or love-making. In spite of the fact that you are on the road, you enjoy good privacy in a car, which may be even better than in a restaurant.

The intensity of these moments can certainly increase the intensity of accidents !

Distraction No.6: Applying Make-up or combing hair, etc [of course for ladies] Some even feel an irresistible desire for make-up and customize their car accordingly. NOW our traffic police is taking this make-up spree behind the wheel seriously.

Distraction No. 7 : A beautiful lady on the road or on the hoarding may also seriously detract your attention.

Distraction No. 8 : Watching TVwhile driving or reading including maps
It is difficult to understand how these auto Co.s get permission for installation of such gadgets like TV on dash boards !!  Do our road safety organizations have any role or control over it !

Distraction No. 9 : we often see people lighting a cigarette, belting themselves or co-passengers, repeatedly glancing at wrist watch, etc during driving.

Distraction No. 10 : One peculiar distraction typical in India only, is bowing before the gods to pay their respects while passing through the road side temples.

As elected members of NCT Delhi, we would also request you to urgently take up the MUNAK CANALissue with PM for its resolution. The Delhi Government has spent over 1500 crore and are still unable to get basic drinking water due to non-decision of the GoI.

*As elected members of NCT Delhi, we would also request you to urgently direct the Govt to take up the MUNAK CANAL issue with PM & Water Resource Minister, Minister for Urban Development for its resolution. The Delhi Government has spent over 1500 crore and are still unable to get basic drinking water due to non-decision of the GoI. Not just Dwarka Munak canal Helps Bawana and Okhala WTP.

*We urge you to ensure DJB to take over water distribution of Dwarka with immediate effect. As the entire network of habituated sectors fully ready and agreed by DDA. Roads have already taken over by PWD and Other services by SDMC.

*As far as rates are concerned Dwarka is ready to bear the competitive rate as prevailing in Delhi for NDMC, DCB area.

*Ensure equal distribution of available Delhi water: Please note even the CAG in its Audit report No 2 of the year 2013 of DJB have asked for equal distribution.

*Dwarka 100% planned sub-city to implement any kind of recycling or dual supply and highest concentration of water harvesting etc. This calls for DJB to have special test and trial programmes ideal for Dwarka and then to rest of Delhi as it is possible with less cost.
